Options for installing the Developer Environment

Paths to Installation

The IBM Cloud-Native Toolkit Developer Environment can be hosted in any Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift cluster, including those managed by IBM Cloud. The environment is provisioned using infrastructure-as-code scripting that makes the process declarative, automated, and repeatable. The provisioning code is implemented as Terraform scripts.

The scripts are organized in a number of stages. When a managed cluster in IBM Cloud is used, the first stage will either provision a new cluster or connect to an existing cluster on IBM Cloud. If a managed IBM Cloud cluster is not used, then the cluster can be provisioned by other means, and the first stage will just expose the cluster configuration values. In this case, we would highly recommend provisioning the cluster using other Terraform scripts.

Plan Installation explains the end-to-end process for creating a IBM Cloud. Within that process, there are three installation options. Select the approach that best suites your requirement:

  • Install new: Create a new environment in IBM Cloud including a new cluster
  • Install existing: Create a new environment in IBM Cloud but install it into an existing cluster
  • Install Red Hat CRC: Create a new environment in Red Hat CodeReady Containers installed locally on your laptop

After installation, remember to complete the steps in Configure Installation.
